New Hub Opens in NW Portland to Aid People with Substance Use Disorder

August 5, 2024

Explore how Portland's new NW hub, a collaborative effort by city and state officials, is providing immediate support and vital resources to individuals struggling with substance use disorders.

The City of Portland, Multnomah County, and the State of Oregon have launched a new hub in northwest Portland to connect individuals struggling with drug addiction to necessary resources. This initiative aims to provide immediate support and streamline collaboration between police and service providers.

The new hub is the result of a successful pilot program that began in December 2023. The pilot allowed members of the Portland Police Bureau Bike Squad to connect individuals struggling with addiction to service providers funded through Measure 110. This direct handoff approach significantly improved the immediate assistance provided to those in need, moving beyond the previous method of issuing citations.

Hub Operations

Located at 434 Northwest Sixth Avenue, the hub will serve as a central point for police and service providers to coordinate their efforts in addressing drug-related issues. The facility will host meetings, facilitate collaboration on responses to drug calls, and handle administrative duties.

Service Providers Involved

Nearly a dozen service providers are participating in the project, including:

  • Another Chance
  • DoGood Multnomah
  • Health Justice Recovery Alliance
  • Iron Tribe Network
  • Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon
  • Miracles Club
  • NW Instituto Latino de Adicciones
  • Portland Street Response
  • Recovery Works NW
  • Sober Housing Oregon
  • Transcending Hope

Impact of the Pilot Program

During the 17-week pilot program, over 150 individuals were connected to treatment or shelter. Since the inception of the program, 270 people have been connected to resources, with 140 receiving assistance the same day they requested it. This initiative has shown that immediate, in-person help can lead to positive outcomes and significant life changes for those struggling with addiction.

The hub's operations are independent of Multnomah County’s deflection program, which will take effect on September 1. The team managing the hub has affirmed that they will continue their efforts to support individuals with addiction regardless of changes in the deflection program.

The opening of the new hub in northwest Portland marks a significant step forward in addressing drug addiction through immediate support and coordinated efforts. This project highlights the potential for positive change and redemption in the community by providing essential resources and collaborative assistance to those in need.
